Cascade Meadows Winter Retreat

Friday, February 17, 2012, 6:00 PM - Monday, February 20, 2012, 1:00 PM

Coordinator:
Lin Carlson

Cascade Meadows is a Baptist Camp 14 miles east of Stevens Pass. (Phone for urgent calls is 509-763-3673)   There is a beautiful, rustic lodge with several bunk rooms, two common areas, a kitchen and restrooms with showers.  There are several smaller buildings at various distances from the lodge that sleep 8-10 people.  The road is plowed during the winter; cars (and drivers) need to be ready for 3 miles of single lane road winter driving.   Because of winter driving conditions in the Pass and at the Camp, cars should carry chains.

Participants should bring with them sleeping bags, pillows (if desired), warm clothes, toiletries and towels. Remember to bring enough clothes appropriate for snow play; wet clothes dry in front of open fireplaces, but this takes a while.  Inner tubes are available at the camp for sliding. Many people cross country ski or snowshoe while at Camp.

We will be bringing in the food for the weekend. Meals and tasks are shared cooperatively.  Everyone will be expected to help with cooking and cleaning--this actually is part of the fun and is a good way to get to know other people. Young people need to be accompanied by a parent or another “responsible adult”.

The Camp can accommodate up to 50 people.  Prices per person over age 5 are $80 for Saturday morning through Monday lunch.  Some people drive up on Friday; if you wish to do so add  $25, for a total of $105. Make checks payable to “UBC” and designate “winter retreat”. Some scholarships may be available. Contact Lin C. for assistance.

Please register as soon as possiblePlease help us have a firm count on February 12th so that we can buy the proper amount of food and assist in arranging transportation. We will assist in organizing carpooling, as parking is limited. Bring snacks for the rides to and from the Camp.  Retreat meals will start with Saturday breakfast and end with lunch on Monday.

Driving Directions: From Seattle take I-5 to 520 East, then go North on 405 until you reach the exit for 522 to Monroe, where you pick up Highway 2 to Stevens Pass. Continue over Stevens Pass past the ski areas and another 12-14 miles.  Watch for a sign on the right for “Cascade Meadows Road” after you make a gradual downhill curve.  The Cascade Meadows Road is a steep turn to the right.  If you pass the old Rayrock grocery store on your left, you have gone about 1/4 mile too far. It is sometimes easier to go to Rayrock and turn around and enter the Cascade Meadows Road from the east. (going up hill)

Parking is at a premium! Availability changes with the amount of snow, the plowing, or other obstacles.  We need to leave spaces for people who may be coming later and not block people in who may be leaving earlier.

Getting settled in to Camp: There will be sign-up sheets for helping with chores posted by the kitchen.  Each person should plan to sign up for at least three (3) tasks over the weekend.

We look forward to seeing you at the Snow Retreat!
