An Allies for Change 20-hour weekend training for white people who seek to deepen their commitment to challenging racism and white privilege in every realm of their daily lives. Led by Rev. Melanie Morrison and Rev. Diane Schmitz, the training will examine our role as white people in the struggle for racial justice and explore how to build stronger alliances with people of color. It is critically important that white people join people of color in naming and confronting racism in all its forms - personal, interpersonal, cultural, and institutional. This training is limited to 20 participants.

Community Events:
Coalition for Refugees from Burma Family Literacy Program Description of Program (activities and who are the participants): The Family Literacy program will target refugee parents who have children between the ages of 2 and 4 years old. The program will provide Early Childhood Education for children and ESL instruction and "Child Development Education" for parents. It will also provide lots of Parent and Child Together time (or PACT time) and we'd like to take families on some field trips. One of the main goals is to help educate parents about how to prepare their children to be successful in school. Our participants will be a max of 8 children and a max of 15 refugee adults. Dates/length of program and time of day/week: The program will run on Mondays and Thursdays for 2 hours, and on Fridays for 3 hours. Volunteers can volunteer one, two, or three times a week. Tasks/expectations for volunteers: Volunteers will mainly be classroom assistants, working with Alix in the Early Childhood Ed room, or with Kirsten in the adult literacy classroom. Specific volunteer tasks will be similar in nature to recent Literacy class - facilitate activities and help teachers model language. Volunteers may also help us take families on field trips. Fun! Who to contact to sign up:

Youth Tutoring Program Description of Program (activities and who are the participants): CRB has partnered with Seattle Public Schools to help support refugee students to be successful in school. As part of that collaboration, CRB is interested in developing a home tutoring program, whereby volunteers will travel to student's homes (or, a location near their homes) to provide individualized, targeted tutoring and/or homework help. We will have a meeting with Seattle refugee families on the 28th of the month to discuss the program, and I'll find out more then about who our students will be (we will allow students in any grade to participate).Dates/length of program and time of day/week: Volunteers will be asked to meet with students at least once a week for at least 2 hours at a time. Days and hours are flexible. The schedule will be up to the student, the student's family and the volunteer to decide. Ideally, tutors could commit to work with their students through the end of school (so, approximately 6 months). Tasks/expectations for volunteers: Volunteers will be asked to provide either tutoring instruction OR to help students complete their homework. CRB will provide resources, ideas and worksheets for tutoring purposes. Who to contact to sign up: Same as above
